Medicare Part D plans for 2012
When selecting a Part D plan in 2012 there are several factors to consider but there are at least two common mistakes that add $100's of dollars of additional costs in the part d plan alone.
The first and most common Part D mistake seems obvious but people do it all the time - Selection based on Premium. If you take no part d covered medications this will work just fine, but those who take just one medication in certain circumstances can waste hundreds of extra dollars. Those taking 3 - 5 Medications in the wrong plan has been shown to cost the consumer $1,000 or more in the wrong medicare Partd D plan. Here is an example of a hypothetical individual taking just 5 fairly common drugs and a few examples of several of the top Medicare Part D plans.
The following shows the cumulative cost of 4 common Part D plans including ALL co-pays, the plan deductible, and all Monthly premiums combined for 12 months: (Source - Medicare.gov) We have left out the names of the plans because this is not in anyway a slight on these plans. All of these plans are very well run and in many cases the part D plan at the bottom could easily be at the top with a different selection of medications. It is very specific to the part d drugs used in each individual case. And that is the point intended.
The second common mistake is not considering the pharmacy one is most likely to use to fill the Part D prescription. Cost does vary from one pharmacy chain to another and of course we know mail order is typically less than walking into a retail pharmacy. But what is often overlooked is the co-pay variation. Many times in Medicare Part D plans co-pays, can vary by as much as $20 for a 30 day supply (more if the drug is not on a plans formulary). Multiply by 12 months and just 2 drugs with a $20 variation and your part D plan can cost $480 more in co-pays.
